Huntsville Site:

The Stars game Friday night with the Mississippi Braves has been rained out. The two teams will make it up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 2:05 p.m. and will play a pair of seven inning games. Left-handers Derek Miller and David Welch will start for the Stars, while the Braves will counter with right-handers James Parr and Todd Redmond.

 

Regular priced tickets for Friday's game can be exchanged for any other game during the remainder of the 2008 season. If you have a Buffalo Rock "buyout" ticket, it can be exchanged for a ticket for Sunday afternoon's game that begins at 2:05.

Tatis, Z's Take Down Sounds, 7-5

METAIRIE, La. - The Nashville Sounds dropped their second straight game to the New Orleans Zephyrs to open the 2008 season, falling 7-5 on Friday evening at Zephyr Field.

 

New Orleans third baseman Fernando Tatis belted a pair of home runs to lead the home club to victory despite being out-hit by Nashville in the contest, 13-12. The veteran infielder has slugged three longballs against Sounds pitching in the first two games of the year.

 

Five Sounds batters posted multiple-hit efforts in the contest, led by Laynce Nix's 3-for-5 evening that included a pair of RBIs.

 

Rehabbing right-hander Yovani Gallardo took a no-decision for the Sounds after he worked four innings in his outing, throwing 75 pitches (50 for strikes). He allowed three runs on six hits while walking one batter and striking out five.

 

New Orleans took a 2-0 lead against Gallardo in the bottom of the second inning. Tatis got things started by homering for the second consecutive evening against Nashville, drilling a leadoff solo shot to left. The Z's added a second run when Gustavo Molina (3-for-4) singled and later scored when Jesus Feliciano (4-for-4) knocked an RBI single to right later in the frame.

 

The Sounds got a run back in the top of the third when Gallardo, Hernan Iribarren, and Nix put together consecutive one-out singles against New Orleans starter Tony Armas, Jr., the last of which plating the Nashville pitcher to cut the lead to 2-1. The Sounds were unable to bring home the tying run from 90 feet away with only one out, however, leaving Iribarren stranded at third when Vinny Rottino flew out to short right and Brad Nelson popped out.

 

The Zephyrs answered the Sounds' run by manufacturing one of their own in the bottom of the frame. Argenis Reyes drew an inning-opening walk, moved to second on a flyout, stole third, and made it a 3-1 game when he scored on a Caleb Stewart groundout.

 

Nashville rallied to tie the game with single runs against Armas in the next two innings. The Sounds added a run in the fourth when Russell Branyan led off with a double to left, moved to third on a wild pitch, and came plateward on a Brendan Katin groundout, bringing the visitors back within a run at 3-2.

 

Nix did his part to aid the Nashville cause over the next two half-innings. The Sounds' centerfielder combined with shortstop Ozzie Chavez to throw out Chris Aguila at the plate while he tried to score from first on a Feliciano double in the bottom of the fourth. Then, Nix knotted the contest at 3-3 in the fifth when his one-out RBI single plated Iribarren, who preceded him with a double to right.

New Orleans retook a 6-3 lead in the sixth by scoring three runs against Nashville reliever Jason Shiell, highlighted by a two-run Aguila homer to left-center.

 

Once again, the Sounds rallied and pulled within a run with a two-run eighth against Z's reliever Nate Field. Katin drove in Brad Nelson with a run-scoring double then came home later in the frame on an Abraham Nunez groundout to make it a 6-5 game.

 

For the third time on the evening, New Orleans immediately responded to a Sounds rally by increasing its cushion in the bottom of the frame on Tatis' second roundtripper of the evening, a solo shot to left that greeted Nashville reliever Steve Bray.

 

Z's reliever Jose Santiago (1-0) picked up the win following a scoreless frame of work. Carlos Muniz worked around a leadoff walk to work a scoreless ninth and earn his second save in as many games.

 

Shiell (0-1) absorbed the loss for the Sounds after giving up three runs in his 1 1/3 innings of action.

 

The teams continue the series with a 6 p.m. meeting on Saturday evening. Left-hander Chris Narveson will make his Sounds debut when he takes the hill to face New Orleans right-hander and former Brewer farmhand Ruddy Lugo.

Cubbies Edge Manatees for First Win

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] The Cubs first win of the season was not easy to come by in a marathon length game, but in the end the Daytona was the last to score and knocked off the Brevard County Manatees, 9-8.

 

Early on Cubs starter Jose Ceda did not show why he was rated the 8th best prospect in the Chicago Cubs organization by InsideTheIvy.com. After getting setting down two of the first three Manatees he faced, Ceda walked his second batter of the inning to put runners on first and second. Chuckie Caufield capitalized on the opportunity with a line drive single to put the Manatees up 1-0.

 

The Cubs came back in the bottom of the frame thanks to a Manatee miscue. With one out SS Matthew Cline overthrew his first baseman on a grounder off the bat of Jonathan Wyatt. Ty Wright knocked in Wyatt with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.

 

In the bottom of the 2nd the Cubs continued to claw at Manatee starter Rafael Lluberes. With Russ Canzler on second base and Darwin Barney on first base Tony Thomas hit an RBI infield single to put the Daytona up 2-1. An errant pickoff attempt by Lluberes scored Barney to give the Cubbies a two-run lead.

 

After a 1-2-3 2nd inning Ceda struggled again to start the 3rd. Darren Ford lead off the inning with a walk then stole two bases to get within 90 feet of scoring. After a long at bat Taylor Green smoked a Ceda fastball to right field for an RBI ground rule double. After walking his fourth batter of the night, Lorenzo Cain, with nobody out Cubs skipper Jody Davis pulled the plug on Ceda's first Daytona Cubs outing.

 

Cubs reliever Marco Carillo seemed to pickup where Ceda left off. After giving up an infield single Caufield continued the Brevard County rally. With the bases loaded Caufield hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to tie the game 3-3.

 

After the fifth walk by the Cubs pitching staff of the game, Brevard County took the lead on a Charlie Fermaint sacrifice fly to left field. This 4-3 Brevard County lead, however, was short lived as Welington Castillo and Darwin Barney each hit RBI singles to give Daytona a 5-4 lead.

 

In inning number five the teams exchanged leads once again. Carillo gave up a one out double to Caufield to start Brevard County's rally in the top of the inning. Two batters later Fermaint doubled in Caufield to even the score at five. Matthew Cline's RBI single to score Caufield gave the Manatees a 6-5 lead.

 

In the 6th inning the Cubs pitching staff continued to be an eyesore as Darin Downs entered the game. Downs walked Taylor Green to start the inning, the seventh base on balls by Daytona pitchers, and Green later scored to push Brevard County's lead to 7-5 after five and a half innings.

 

In this seesaw of the game the Cubs inched closer in the bottom of the inning when Jim Adduci knocked in Tony Thomas. Brevard County, however, remained on top 7-6 through six innings.

 

Not satisfied with a one-run lead, Fermaint looked to take the game into his own hands. After advancing to first base on an error by Downs, Fermaint stole 2nd and 3rd on back-to-back pitches in the 7th inning. Martin Maldonado finished the job with a sacrifice fly to right field to give Brevard County an 8-6. Things looked even bleaker for Cubs fans as the Barney and Thomas were set down in order to start the bottom of the 8th inning.

 

Jonathan Wyatt, however, stepped up to the plate and used his patience to start a Cubs rally with a walk. Wright followed with a single to put two on for Adduci. The Cubs right fielder earned the Daytona Dogs Player of the Game award after hitting a game tying two-run double. Adduci then scored on a Lansford RBI single to put the Cubs on top to stay 9-8.

 

Though the Cubs pitching staff struggled for most of the game Dumas Garcia shut down the Manatees in the 8th and 9th innings in order to get the win for Daytona.

Adduci's double propels Cubs over Manatees

DAYTONA BEACH -- It's a good thing baseball doesn't have a clock, otherwise time might have run out on the Daytona Cubs Friday night.

But on a night when it took more than two hours to play the first four innings, the Cubs rallied from a two-run deficit in the eighth inning to score three runs and take a 9-8 win against the Brevard County Manatees at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

It took 3 hours and 35 minutes for the Florida State League rivals to complete the nine-inning contest, but it was worth the wait for Cubs.

Daytona's Jim Adduci went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, including the two runs that tied the game at 8 in the eighth inning. Adduci delivered a two-out double to drive in Jonathan Wyatt, who started the rally with a two-out walk, and Ty Wright, who scored from first base after he had reached base on a single past third.

Josh Lansford's single to right drove in Adduci with the game-winning run.

"That double by Ducci was huge," Cubs manager Jody Davis said. "I waved him home, but I'm glad they overthrew the cutoff there otherwise it was going to be close (for Wright) at plate."

Cubs reliever Dumas Garcia, the only Daytona hurler who didn't allow a run, earned the win by retiring each of the six batters he faced.

"When he throws the ball over the plate, he's as good as anyone we have," Davis said. "And we're searching for a closer. Early in the spring he had trouble throwing strikes, but the last couple of times out he's thrown strikes."

Adduci also drove in a run in the sixth inning with a two-out single up the middle.

"It's only two games in," Adduci said, downplaying his 3-for-7 start with four RBIs and two runs in two games. "It's good to start getting the confidence going. It's good to get that first win, especially when we're going on the road. It definitely feels good to put the barrel on the ball."

Very long, in fact.

Both teams combined for 23 hits, 12 walks and there were 10 trips to the mound by pitching coaches and managers.

Brevard County was able to take advantage of the free passes as four of the Manatees' runs were scored by runners who reached on walks.

Daytona's hitters banged out 14 hits with Tony Thomas leading the way with a 3-for-5 effort. Wright, Adduci, Lansford, Welington Castillo and Darwin Barney each had two hits for the Cubs.

Rotoworld about the Cubs' starter who faced Brevard Friday:

Jose Ceda gave up four runs in two innings Friday in his first start for Single-A Daytona.

Ceda is viewed as a long-term reliever, but the Cubs are going to have him start for now to give him more chances to work on his offspeed pitches. The 21-year-old has one of the best fastballs in the minors and has been known to hit triple-digits on the radar gun.

Taylor Green wasting no time in trying to make Matt Gamel, can he play 3rd questions, irrelevant. I'm curious to see how he'll do in AA, since that usually is the place that seperates the unheralded guys who can make it from those who can.
