Andrew Bogut Turning Out To Be a Pretty Nice Player

bobbledude25
Maybe it's just me but it looks like Andrew Bogut is one of the only Bucks that looks like we should keep when the rebuilding begins. He seems to be asserting himself nicely ofensively and he's starting to block some shots and grab some boards. However, he still needs to work on his D and free throws to live up to the hype of being the #1 pick but I've been pleasantly surprised from him (and him only) this season

I mentioned this in the other Bucks thread. I think he's been averaging like 16 pts and 13 reb since Jan 1.

I've always believed in Bogut. Too talented of a guy with more than enough physical gifts to fail in the NBA. I think he's going to continue improving his game too, this isn't his ceiling. If he could get a consistent outside shot which he hit college I think he really could be the 20/10 guy he was suppose to be. Having a PG like Ramon Sessions would help too. Big men take awhile too develop, just have to have patience. I'd like to see them make a commitment to Bogut as "the guy". I'd think we'd fair better than we did this season.

I still think Bogut will "live up to" the number 1 pick in the draft. People (including those on this board) have bashed the pick because of what Chris Paul has done, which is fine. Drafting Chris Paul in the Bucks situation though would've been like the Packers taking 2 quarterbacks in the first 2 rounds of last year's draft. They had talent already on their roster and why draft additional talent at the spot? I also think people forget how Bogut dominated in college. He's had to adjust his style a bit to the NBA and it's still a growing process. He's been hurt by playing with crappy coaches, but he's still fighting through that and being a good player.

I hope the next coach we have runs the offense through Bogut. He's too good of a passer to not get the ball almost every time down the court. I also think Bogut is going to develop into that "bad guy" down low that the Bucks have needed for so long. I'm not saying "bad guy" as in Anthony Mason bad, but a guy that is going to not give up easy baskets and will deliver a hard foul and send a message every now and then.

No. The Bucks didn't and still don't have a superstar player. Drafting in the NFL usually means adding depth unless you're up at the top in the 1st round then you're looking for a star player. Drafting #1 in the NBA or even in the top 3 you need to get a star player there. While Bogut is turning into a fine center Paul would've made this team much better than it is now and would've given us a better future.

Yep, it's not having a midrange or turn around post up jumper that's held him back at this point in his career. The frustrating thing is he could shoot in college, but he gets to the NBA and suddenly he can't make a shot farther than five feet from the rim and his free throw percentage took a nosedive. I'm at a loss to how this happened?

If Andrew could start making a midrange jumper, defenders wouldn't be able to sag way off him like they do no in the high post. Plus, i think Bogut scores best in the paint when he's moving, like on flash cuts vs strict post up plays. If Andrew ever gets that midrange shot down, defenders will be forced to play him closer on the high post and Bogut could then drive on them or pass without a big sagging back by the rim.. Be able to hit a jumper or two a game and make free throws at a decent clip, then i could see Bogut enter that 18ish points per game area.

From what I recall there was little mention of Chris Paul around here when the Bucks had that #1 pick. It was all Marvin Williams vs. Bogut - might have been a post or two mentioning Paul but the vast majority of people split into the other two camps.

Absolutely no one was even thinking about the Bucks taking Paul. They had just gotten Ford who had shown promise and they had a gaping whole at PF and C. So it really came down to Marvin Williams or Bogut. Anyone thats suggests they should have picked Paul at #1 is completely looking in hindsight. Paul is awesome but the Bucks made the right pick.

Agreed. I believe it's also more difficult to find an All-Star big man than an All-Star point guard. Hopefully Bogut develops into that. When the Bucks took Bogut, they had absolutely zero big guys with his talent, but they had two quality point guards.

I was a big Paul fan coming out of college and thought he was the best player in the draft. But since we had TJ and Mo I didn't see the need for him. I thought that Bogut would become an elite big man, and he still just may become one. I never wanted to take Marvin Williams.

On another note, I never thought Deron Williams was gonna turn into such a good player. I was stunned when he went ahead of Paul but one could definitely justify it now.

That's fine that all the talk was Bogut vs Marvin and that we had T.J. and Mo but what we still lacked back then and still do today is a star player. Bogut is a fine player and will most likely make a few all-star appearances but taking Chris Paul or Deron Williams would put the Bucks in a much better position than they are in today.

Bogut is more of a star than Williams. Williams just gets more publicity right now because they are winning.

Deron Williams? I'm sorry that's ridiculous. Williams averages 19.3 points, 3 rebounds and 10.5 assists while shooting 51.5% from the field.

Bogut on the other hand, even with his average of 16/10 in 2008 still only averages 14.1 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists while shooting 50.7%.

The thing that concerns me is Bogut only shoots 50.7% while rarely taking a shot beyond 5 feet. That's just not a good percentage.

He was probably thinking you meant Marvin Williams, at least I hope so.

Paul and Deron may be better but I don't think anybody could blame the Bucks for not taking them as Bogut was the consensus #1 pick with people who were uncomfortable with taking a white guy #1 who mumbled about Marvin Williams. Atlanta, if anyone, should get the heat for taking Marvin Williams. They desperately needed PG and already had like 4 SFs and Chris Paul was the surest player in the draft.

I admit to knowing less than many about the Bucks, but one thing that seems very impressive with Bogut is that you can legitimately "build around" him and not have to build beneath him for the future. He seems to be the type who'd be totally cool being one of several very good players on a team, unlike the typical NBA tactic of having to be the franchise's only star and taking all of the shots. Detroit has some nice players, but they don't have a true "superstar", yet they manage to win because they have many good players who contribute.
