SLR Cameras in Miller Park

TeeJayh1980
does anyone know the rules for bringing a Digital SLR camera into the stadium? Are only long zoom lenses frowned upon, or are all SLR cameras in general banned? I'm a semi-pro photographer, and I really want to bring my new telephoto lens on Sunday since we have very nice seats. I've even thought about sneaking it in for a few shots if I have to. Anyone good at making fake Press Photographer passes? lol

as far as I know they don't have a rule bringing in SLRs. How big is your lens? If It's one like the pros use, then they might have a problem with it. I bring a 28-80mm and a 70-300mm lens with a Nikon SLR body and have never had any problems.

The only place I couldn't bring my SLR was the Target Center in MN, but I snuck it past them.

I'd carry the camera in without a lens, and maybe throw the lens in a small backpack or something, so it looks less conspicuous.

Its only a 70-200mm lens, but its 2.8 and has IS so I should be able to get some very nice action shots from section 116.

I brought the same set up in TeeJayh and did not have a problem, this was last year.

The year before that I brought in a nikon body with the 80-400mm lens in and did not have an issue, it was just heavy to lug around.

Kind of, off topic, but what tripod set up are you using? I am looking for a new one and have one picked out with a ball head, but always looking for other opinions

thats not my tripod in the picture, just some google image I found. I have the 5D + Canon 70-200 F2.8IS. The tripod I use is the Bogen Manfrotto 3021 with a Bogen 3030 3-Way Pan/Tilt Tripod Head with Quick Release Plate. It's very very sturdy but heavy. My other tripod is the Slik Sprint Pro traveling tripod...so far its the best travel tripod I've found based on weight and sturdiness. I think it weighs under 2 lbs. I don't plan on taking a tripod to the game since they are so heavy and bulky, but maybe a monopod.

MHgb, you saved me from bringing my monopod and getting scolded for it. Thank you.

I have seen a camera similar to that in MP before. I don't think you will have too much of a problem. BTW, that's a really nice camera.

Thanks Berniebrewer4life. I've been very fortunate to be able to buy professional gear. I started a photography side business for fun. I started with a very cheap camera, did some photoshoots, bought a nice lens, did some better photoshoots, got paid more, bought a new camera and here I am. Everything pays for itself. I shoot my first wedding in 2 weeks!

the one thing about photography, its not cheap. Thats set up is awesome, but unless you're doing if for a business its not going to fit into many peoples budgets. The canon 5d is a really nice body, especially since it has the full frame sensor. I love your set up, and you should be able to take awesome pics in MP with it.

I was going to bring my mono pod in this year, thanks for the rules on that. Good thing your lens has IS on it, so that'll help out a lot.

I'm really torn on whether I should bring my 5D, or my Rebel XT. The Rebel XT would give me 320mm with that lens versus 200mm with the 5D. Hmm..decisions decisions. I love the 5D because ISO 1600 is completely usable. If I can pull 1/500 shutter speeds for some action shots at Miller Park, I'll be in heaven.

and yeah, IS is a godsend!

So if you are a BF fan at the game on Sunday, look to section 116, row 18 for a guy with a white lens. Holler at me and I'll take your portrait with a pro camera and email it to ya!

hmm, thats a tough call, what row are you in? You might need the extra distance, but 200 still should get you in, close. Id just bring both bodies, its a pain, but no different than carrying more than 1 lens.

I actually lucked into a cheap(Not for me, but for cameras i think it is) camera a few weeks ago, when my father(he loves taking pictures, he's pretty good too) upgraded. It's an old 35mm Canon Rebel Ti. 90mm lens, so hopefully i can play around and figure out what i am doing with it, and maybe learn how to take decent pictures! It's starting to become very fun to try and do.

Row 18. Assuming 18 is quite a ways away, I'll probably want the XT....lol Id much rather lug around a $600 camera than a $2500 one anyways.

You should be fine bringing the XT expecially if you are going to use the 70-200mm f/2.8. I love that lens, it's a great sports lens, but I have used it for wildlife as well.

I have the 40D and I always want to bring it, but I don't want anything to happen to it.

in a month or two I'll be upgrading my nikon d50 to the nikon d300. I really need to upgrade the lens.

Jason let me know what you think of the d300 when you get it, I am curious. I came from the Nikon D70 and went to the Canon 40D. I am so far happy with my decision, I would do back to Nikon now because of all the money I have invested in glass.

from using it at work, the camera is amazing. The 6.0 fps is crazy fast.

Nikon and Canon are both awesome and one isnt really better than the other. If you have more money invested in quality Nikon glass, I'd grab the D300 for sure. Image quality wise, it's on pace with the 5D, but feature wise the D300 is superior. However, the 5D MKII is coming out soon.

I brought my Nikon D40 last year with two lenses and there wasn't a problem. I agree with one of the posters -- just bring it in a slingbag or something like that. Put it together while you are there, but don't get in anybody's way. That will probably get people miffed off.

Make sure you share the pictures!!!!!!!
