Eric Neel with a column about heroes of baseball

PRINCE FIELDER, 1B, MILWAUKEE BREWERS I'm not going to lie. It's the Kirby Puckett, Charles Barkley, Fridge Perry, you-shouldn't-be-able-to-do-that-at-your-size, you-shouldn't-be so-Weebly-and-yet-so-formidable-all-at-once thing that charms me -- makes me value each home run as somewhere on the order of 1.37 runs, and each single as a cause for celebration. Throw in the fact that he is, as Vin Scully so matter-of-factly put it the other night, "named for the enigmatic rock star," and you have something truly special.

will ever be hated by me.

Anything he writes on SI about the brewers I won't read.

Petty, maybe. But he's a hack IMO.

SI article after 2002 ASG

Keep the game out of Milwaukee. ........... Milwaukee might be equipped to host porcelain bathroom fixture conventions, but an All-Star Game? Forget it. The city was so eager to show the world its sophistication that it housed the international media contingent 15 miles away from downtown in roadside suburban hotels.

I've never liked Verducci since he wrote that article and took a couple cheap shots at my city. His shots on Milwaukee were inappropriate and unprofessional--the outcome of that game had nothing to do with the fact that Milwaukee is not the flashiest city in the country. What a hack.

Not to dredge up old business, but Verducci's complaints were legit and he was far from the only national writer to complain that week about the accomondations, the leaky roof, and yes, the backyard picnic spread the Crew put out.

These aren't national news media stories, but they're good:

A comparison of Ryan Howard's '06 and Prince's '07. When will they stop pitching to Prince?

Note to self: don't eat brats before the 5th inning.

The Sporting News has an article today where a few players name the best in their fields (ie, Sheets names his 5 favorite pitchers to watch, etc.).

Todd Helton says that Prince has the 2nd best lefthanded swing in MLB and Jason Bay says that JJ and Prince are the 2 most underappreciated players in the game.

I've always admired Capuano for his intelligence and determination. There's something about him that just seems to indicate a guy whose never satisified always looking for something to provide an edge. The link below cements my beliefs, his list and reasoning shows this is a guy who truly is living in and enjoying Milwaukee.

There hasn't been anything written about it, but his production decline coincided with him taking that fast ball off his leg in late April/early May. I wonder if he's been playing hurt since then and the groin strain is a result of him dealing with it. Just speculation.

Anyway, enjoy the link.

Although I always sided with Big Ben in the "Who's our ace?" debate, Cappy has probably been my favorite Brewer for a while now. I really started to respect him when he was learning Japanese when Tomo Ohka was on the team, and he doesn't seem to be fazed to be himself.

I admit i have been checking him out daily trying to get bucks stuff from him, but then he goes and continues to write dumb articles about the brewers.

Apparently he feels that the brewers recent success combined with YoGo's major league debut had little to due with the large attendance and it was more due to Bonds. I think it may of helped, but last year we weren't getting 35k when Barry Bonds was here. Unforunatelyfor Gerry's argument the brewers only averaged 23429 fans in 5 home games against the giants last season.

Quote:
In other words, 112,020 fans took in the series. That?s an average of 37,340 a game ? well above the Brewers? season home average of 32,551.

In all due fairness to Gerry, Bonds was never projected to break Hank Aaron's record around the time of the Brewers series in 2006.

Of course, what makes this laughable, is that the Brewers played the Giants in May (2 games) and September (4) in 2006 -- periods where attendance is traditionally low.

Maybe he just doesn't understand that baseball attendance tends to go up during the summer-time?
