It is long, but it is a great story. People who could not make it through the end would think it was true. Plimpton was a great writer.

Could have been a little more plausible. I saw "168-mph fastball" and that was a dead giveaway. 105-110 might have been believable.

Before the internet, this seemed more plausable. Remember, this wasn't some anonymous internet blog, this was in the Sports Illustrated in your mailbox.

Topps did a play on this in their 2008 set. They put in a card of the "Uzi", a 16 year old Japanese pitcher that would be the next MLB superstar. Don't recall the full name, but it translated from Japanese as the "son of the first day of April". Many people bought up these cards hoping that they would be able to turn a huge profit when he came over, only to find out it was an April fools joke. Apparently these geniuses thought that Topps had found someone that BA and the rest of the world has missed.

I still have my Sidd Finch issue with Dwight Gooden on the cover of their baseball preview issue. Excellent read. I still remember being simply mesmerized as a 12-year old reading it.
