I'll say this about Gagne. He showed me something after giving up the HR. With no outs and the game tied, he got them to the 10th by getting 4 outs. He made much better pitches once the game was tied.

Exactly. And once he quit throwing all fastballs and started throwing some curves and changes he looked better. He also got squeezed by the ump on a few pitches.

The great thing is we are 1-0.

Good game on the whole. You'll always know you're still alive when a Brewer's closer comes in this year. Wish they had the gun going to see what Gagne's velocity is. Hopefully his post HGH stuff is still elite.

Gwynn is the hero of the game - but, he did barely hit the ball out of the infield, aside from his sac fly.

Yost has his position players bunt with two strikes yet again. Good outcome, terrible decision.

Was it just me, or was the ump's zone all over the place once Sheets and Zambrano got pulled?

Gwynn had an a great game at the plate and in the field. 2 hits, a nice bunt, a great catch, and a clutch sac fly. I know the hits weren't pretty but he made contact and used his speed to get on base.

I have always believed that you need a few small guys in the lineup who do the fundamental things right. Gwynn seems like one of those guys.

I thought Brian or Bill said he was throwing 93-94 for his fastball.

I don't know if anyone else mentioned this because I haven't read through the whole thread, but does anyone else think Gagne may have been sick? After he gave up the hit to Lee he was crouched behind the mound and it looked like he was about to puke. Then for the rest of the inning he was strangely fanning his face. I was thinking maybe he was having hot flashes or something when he was fanning his face... but then I remembered him crouching behind the mound. Maybe he's got the flu bug also.

Either he's in the middle of menopause or he should have done the lasik with Kendall this offseason. I think his goggles were just fogging up, which I'm sure we'll hear as an excuse soon..... although I almost threw up on myself during that inning.....

Only got to hear bits and pieces; much obliged if anyone cares to enlighten...

Was Zambrano's exit due to finger or forearm? (A doctor friend of mine replayed it over and over super slow-mo and opined that it could be a serious finger.)

Was Mota as good as the box indicates? (who'd he mow down?)

Any Turnbow camera shots seeing Riske get the call?

What was Prince's (prima donna?) reaction in the 9th?

How'd Billy do at 3rd / Ryan at OF?

I love beating the Cubs.

I wish Cameron was in the clubhouse to congratulate Tony on a wonderful game.

I am sure Fukudome appreciated the love he received from the 9th inning crowd in "chant-form", and it actually was quite boisterous (to the tune of, say, "F the Yan - kees"), but damn is that Americanly unoriginal. Afterall, he is coming from a fanbase / stadium that sings (standing) tributes for the ENTIRE 3+ hours. Baby steps I guess.

Now I can say I have officially posted to this thread.

I could only watch the bottom of the ninth (made me sick) and then the good part, inning #10.

The only thing worse than a Cub fan is a happy Cub fan. I'm glad to see them beaten.

I really think I need to mellow out a bit. When Gagne blew the save I was outraged. Not totally because of the three run lead evaporating, but because those people at Wrigley Field cheering.

-I used to have a neat-o signature, but it got erased.

Good game guys.

Kudos on the new pen. Other than Gagne they looked pretty damn solid. I was questionable (as an outsider) about their moves before today, and yes it's only one game, but they looked solid.

I think the Brewers could win 95 games this year. Oh well, hopefully the Cubs can make the wild card!

Also, why do you get the impression that Sheets outpitched Z?

6.1 IP 2 H 2 BB 0 ER

6.2 IP 3 H 1 BB 0 ER

Sheets threw 98 pitches, Z threw about 90 and probably would have thrown another inning if he didn't get his stupid cramps. I was at the game so I didn't see it on TV, but my impressions are that they pitched equally, which is really a shocker since Z sucks on Opening Day and Sheets usually doesn't do great against the Cubs.

in terms of "moral victory" stuff our ace outpitched theirs

Since I couldn't actually watch the game, did Sheets really outpitch Z?

No. It was basically a draw.

Sheets: 6.1 IP, 2 H, 7 K, 2BB, 0 R

Zambrano: 6.2 IP, 3 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 0 R

So, both allowed the same number of base runners. Sheets had 2 more K, one-third fewer innings.

Sheets did get hit harder overall, though. Two of Zambrano's hits were to Gwynn - the first was an infield single, the second was a bloop single.

Exactly. My opinion of Gwynn hasn't changed with todays performance. He's a singles hitter, and some of them dropped in today.

I'm not usually one to complain about the umps, but the calls went more the Cubs way today. In Fukudome's 2nd at bat, Sheets struck him out a couple of times but the official result was a walk because of a pin-sized strike zone. And Pie was out but it was too close to get mad over. If we would of wound up losing that inning no doubt I would have been mad.

Great performance by Sheets though. He looked better today than ANY start last year.

As a fan of Brewers and Fukudome(Sorry, guys), it's a nice game.

When Fukudome hit a HR, some Cubs fans held Japanese signs "It's just an accident"

It corresponds to what Google translate "It's gonna happen", but... Japanese MLB fans burst into laugh.

1) Report was that Zambrano had a cramp in his forearm. Might have had something to do with when he got taken out by Lee on the pop fly. Didn't look serious, though. His pitch count was getting up there, anyway.

2) Mota made me a little nervous on the first batter, Ward, as he went to a full count, but finally got him to line out after a couple full count foul balls. K'ed Theriot and Soriano and looked pretty nice in doing so.

3) There was a shot of Turnbow after Gagne blew the save. He did not look happy.

4) I missed the Fielder thing (I think I had turned to look at BF.net).

5) Hall looked excellent at third. Had one very, very nice pick on an in-between hop. I don't think Braun saw a single ball hit to him.
