More Credence to Opening At Miller, Not Wrigley.

lcbj68c

As I expected, I'll be sorely disappointed if opening day can't be enjoyed due to the weather elements. 3 days out, so I'd be fairly confident in the reliability of the forecast. Something tells me in my gut there will be no game on Monday and not having to work will be in vain. The schedule makers are morons. For those not wanting to look, it's 60% chances of rain storms

On the other hand, Friday in Milwaukee looks like 43 degrees with morning clouds and sunny skies. Enjoy the tailgatting.

I really can't picture the game not getting played on Monday. With all the hoopla, they'll get it in if it's at all possible. But yeah, it is not going to be very much fun. I'll probably have to bust out some long underwear or something.

I wouldn't want the Cubs opening in Miller, because opening weekend is a good draw anyways, but there's no reason to be playing in Chicago in March. It is miserable out right now and I don't anticipate it getting much better by Monday.

Opening Weekend might be a good draw, but this is really opening weekdays. Putting the Cubs at Miller Park in the first weekdays in April, would certainly help sell those 2nd and 3rd games of the year that normally dont get draw good numbers. While the Brewers dont need help with Opening day, they typically sell slow for weekdays and the 2nd and 3rd game. But yeah, the Cubs should never open the season at home. It's not fair, but Milwaukee dealt with it for years and years before they built a domed stadium.

Too bad we're not opening today - it's cold but at least it's sunny.

For all of the junk I've seen about the Cubs on this site since I've been here, this one is spot on.

NL should open in LA SD SF Ariz, Hou, Atl, Fla, Mil with only Atl and SF being possible cold spots.

And yeah I think they should dump the "traditional opener" in Cinci as long as there's 8 places to play. Do I relish the thought of always opening on the road? NO but it's the right thing to do.

The forecast suddenly looks really nasty for Monday in Chicago. On a positive note, some warm temps might sneak in and get the temperature into the 50s. On the other side, the norther half of Wisconsin is going to be greeted with snow on opening day.

The thing about thunderstorms is that there's a decent chance to get a few hour break to play the game, so hopefully things will work out. Otherwise, I'm guessing they will make it up on Tuesday??

They have to play outdoors in the Midwest and Northeast eventually. what is the difference if it is 40 and raining on april 1 or april 11th? The weather in April sucks for half the country. Really, in the NL teams like Pitt, Philly, Wash, NYM, Chicago, and Colorado should have domed stadiums, it just makes too much sense.

I think Minnesota is building a stadium with no dome. Oof, what a mistake. They havent watched an outdoor game in Minnesota either football or baseball in what, 40 years? They have no idea what they are in store for.

Places like St. Louis, Cincy, and SF should be ok in April, Washington might also be a swing stadium, as I know it gets nice in DC much earlier than in the Midwest.

Heh. No, it never rains in Chicago in mid-April.

And yes, the Brewers would LOVE playing their first 14 games in early April...wouldn't that draw well.

Sadly, some teams have yet to realize a retractable roof has been readily available for 2 decades now. I feel no pity for them losing dates, only for the fans stuck out in the elements because they feel the pain of "wasting" $50 tickets.

Don't get me started. Never mind - you just did.

Just a couple of years ago we went up to Miller for a Cubs game - same weekend as Summerfest. Spent a day at the fest in beautiful sunshine - it was hot. Cooled off in the early evening - a beeee-you-tiful night for baseball. We watched in astonishment as the roof was closed while we sat there pre game. Why? There were a couple of clouds in the sky.

What's the point of a retractable roof if it's not open on a georgeous night? (We heard from some Brewer fans that there had been problems with the opening and closing of the roof so if there was ANY chance of even the slightest rain the roof would be closed since it might not get closed fast enough.) Oh well, stuck indoors and comfortable in the summer, able to close the doors and comfortable in the spring. I know the Brewers err on the side of closing the roof rather than have fans get wet or be cold, but it sure beats spending every other inning in the bathroom to warm up, like I did the last time I was at Wrigley.

Cubfan:

The roof had a number of mechanical issues that lingered all the way through the beginning of the 2007 season. It is now fully functional (although some water still gets in). Going along with that, the Brewers had a somewhat embarrassing moment last year when a surprise downpour came with the roof 2/3 open during warmups and caused all the fans/players to run for cover--so you need to be careful. It's a good problem to have though.

Sidenote: some of the models are now showing Monday with highs in the 60's with severe thunderstorms and a tornado risk. Stay tuned.

It makes the "Roof Open/Roof Closed" game all the more difficult and intriguing. Give me stadium in a northern city that has a retractable roof all day/every day. No matter what the weather, you can confidently plan trips/outings/parties at random games with no worry about mother nature raining you out.

I've been to Wrigley for about 75 games over the past 5-6 seasons - the only thing appealing about it to me was that it was 3 blocks from my apartment...Cub fans don't like to hear that they don't even have the best stadium in their own city, but it's true. Hopefully the plans to fully renovate Wrigley keep the nostalgia and actually add some fan-friendly comforts. At the very least, the urinating troughs have to be taken out - every time a guy has to use the facilities it feels like you're at a tractor pull.

Why would a cubfan be on brewerfan.net? Doesn't make any sense to me. I recommend northsidebaseball.com.

I like cubfan. He/she brings a nice outside perspective IMO. Something we all need now and then.

Cool! Cubfan, feel as welcome as possible to this site. We would love to have you here for the 2008 season. Just be aware that the Brewers are going to win the NL Central. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
