When to trade over-excess players

Not sure this deserves it's own thread, but I think it might.

Is it just me, or does "holding out for better value" seem to often times lead to players in a numbers crunch simply getting released for nothing. I just think teams are more willing to go with whomever they have in spring training for a while rather than trade for a guy out of desperation at the end of the spring. Obviously talking Vargas for this one. You can't tell me it was wiser to hold onto him until now than it would have been to trade him at the winter meetings. That is when we should have dealt a starting pitcher. Now, Cappy and Vargas are essentially done with us and we got nothing for them. I hate "selling low", but given some trends, holding on to guys until springs final days hardly seems like it's paying off for us the past couple of years.

Hate those Rodents,

Obviously they overvalued those guys at the winter meetings and again when they offered both arbitration. Opposing GM's can count. They knew the Brewers would be in numbers bind around now, and they waited.

But don't worry, it's a lot easier finding guys like Vargas than guys like Sheets, Gallardo, Villanueva or Parra. Those guys just aren't available.

we've done the same thing for several years now. last year it was graffy, mench and jenkins.. I keep hearing the statement, that we can't trade him in October - December timeframe because his value is too low, or because he was injured, and we want to showcase him and his health in Spring training and then trade him to a team in need.

Well the problem is that the team in need always finds a cheaper solution and stays with him rather than trading for our excess guy. All this showcasing in spring games goes for naught. I' m begining to be of the opinion that it's smarter to trade the guy for possibly less value and at least get something in return for him. I would have loved for the brewers to have traded mench and graffy to anybody at the begining of last year than to just waive good bye to them. Surely, somebody would have given us somebody for mench at the 2006 Winter meetings.

The same should apply to Gross and tony Gwynn Jr. We should have traded one of these two players 3 months ago when we had received inquiries. We will receive nothing for either player at the end of this year.
