This sounds weird saying it, but how good would the Brewers pen look if they had Marte? He did sort of fall out of favor with the White Sox, but he's been really good this year, and he has pitched in the postseason before (albeit in a mop-up sort of role)

Mr. Melvin, time to kick the tires on Damaso!

Doesn't sound weird at all. I don't think anyone is expecting a blockbuster from Melvin at the deadline, but I'd say it's pretty likely that we don't head into the stretch run with Shouse as our only left-handed option in the pen.

"Youman stinks and Cappy is generally pretty good."

In limited action w/ the Pirates last year, Youman compiled a 2.91 ERA. 'Small sample size' me all you want, but to make a blanket statement that he stinks seems like spurious logic to me. He?s no Cy Young, but he?s gotten big league hitters out before.

Have you looked at Capuano's numbers vs. Pittsburgh? They're wretched. Add in the fact that he?s coming off the DL, so we don?t know what to expect, and it's tough to like the matchup no matter WHO the Pirates are throwing.

Like I said, more power to you brother, I hope you?re right. I?m just not seeing what you?re seeing, especially regarding Capuano.

I never feel good about a guy's start when he's fresh off the DL. Pitchers seem like such routine guys that like everything to be in order, and when that order is disturbed they seem more likely to falter. Cappy did say he thought his arm never felt better...but what I'm worried about is if he will have the command.... and cappy is all about command.

I still don't understand why they can't show every game on tv. why doesn't fsn want to pick up those extra 18 games? Its like throwing money away.

If his numbers are far, far worse in a larger sample size this year in AAA, which numbers would you use as the basis for your comparison?

I know this doesn't really pertain to the In-Game Thread, but there's no point in starting a topic on it...

I was at the game last night (first time at PNC) and I only noticed one bullpen (where the Brewers were). Does anyone know if the Pirates bullpen is kind of hidden somewhere or maybe they share one? Either that or I'm just dumb and didn't notice it.

They must be using faster horses around here cos the USA Today made it to Kwik Trip before 6pm. 5 pictures of the Brewers and one of Floyd missing a ball. That's great since I'm going to see the in-laws in Racine for the 4th (several Cub fans). I'm plopping the sports section right down in the middle of the living room table for all to see.

Thanks Brian for the pic. Youngest player to 50 does have a nice ring to it. Ryan Howard must have been a year older last year than Prince is now.

howard was 25 last year, which makes what prince is doing even a little more impressive

"Stink" might have been a bit severe. I'll revise my statement and simply say he's not a good starting pitcher at this point in his career. He'll be 28 in October and hasn't done much in the minors to prove he belongs in the majors. As for his "limited action" from last year, did you do anything more than just glance at the ERA? 5 SO and 10 BB in 21.2 IP. If I wanted to ignore the sample size, I'd probably use that as further evidence that he's not very good but it would be foolish to try and judge a guy based on the results of 3 starts.

Pitcher/team splits are interesting to look at but they generally have little or no predictive value. Should I really suspect that Paulino will continue to mash Capuano based on the results of 13 AB? Just not enough information.

Maybe we should have "obnoxious sig day" to remind everyone why we don't allow picture sigs.

That's ok Brian, just a quick glance at northsidebaseball is more than enough. I think an obnoxious sig day would make the IGT even more painful to read than WOAH SOLVDD in haiku day. (Please people that is really not a suggestion).
