Matthews vs Landry

TheCrew07

An old debate for sure, but after 3 years mostly complete, who would you rather have? When I was watching them play in Highschool I was upset that Matthews didn't want to play at UW as I thought he was the better player. They play different positions, but given how their careers have turned out, who would you rather have?

I should note that UW is my first love, but I also root for MU when they aren't playing UW, so my opinion isn't totally unbiased.

I'd rather have Landry at this point, but it was much tougher to decide than I thought it would be when I was watching Marquette this afternoon. While I'm on record as not being thrilled with his defensive efforts, I think his all around upside is higher. I expected Matthews to be a beast, but he's been the glue for MU, he's their version of Krabbenhoft in many ways. Maybe I just had lower expectations for Landry and ended up pleasantly surprised.

I was telling a friend (a marquette fan) that I thought Matthews was completely useless. He doesnt shoot well at all, he isnt a point guard, he passes so-so, he defends so-so, he doesnt slash exceptionally well. He is a pretty big disappointment in my opinion, but then again, I dont knw what was expected of him.

Landry had lower expectations, but he exceeded them, IMO, his freshman year and I thought he would grow from there, but he really hasnt gotten any better.

I think Matthews has always been in a tough position by being forced to play bigger than he is. Marquette hasn't recruit any decent big men for years, and with James and McNeal, and now lately Acker and Cubillian in the lineup, Matthews has been forced to play out of position. He does not shoot well, but i think he defends ok. As an MU fan, I'd prefer to have Landry only because he is 2 inches taller and they need more bigs. Then they wouldn't have to play Dwight Burke as much.
