Kohl already looking to replace Harris; Harris fired; Latest--John Hammond hired

The difference is Steve Kerr knows everybody in the NBA. Simmons knows the guy who sold him his Clipper season tickets.
I am not saying Simmons really should be the GM of the Bucks. But I think saying he doesn't know anyone is pretty off base.

First off, Simmons is one of the most read sports reporters. He actually talks with a fair share of NBA personnel managers. (They are usually scouts and he doesn't reveal their identity as a reporter should)

Plus, why would he have to know anyone? Mark Cuban probably didn't know any other NBA owners when he bought the Mavericks. The point is, other GM would get to know him pretty quick. (Even if only because they wanted to take advantage of him)

Its not like Simmons would call the Joe Dumars and the secretary would say "Bill Simmons? I'm sorry - We've never talked to you before. Well....Yes, I did hear you are GM of the Bucks now. But, well...we only deal with people we have met before. And since you are new, no one in the NBA is going to answer your calls"

I believe Bill Simmons would at least be an average GM. Highly unlikely he would be great - but average is very attainable. I just think it is unfair that someone such as Kerr can get a job and no one bats an eye even though he has no experience. (Keep in mind, Kerr also got a job with a contender)

They lost to Miami when Miami didn't have Wade or Marion.

This time they lost to a starting lineup of Chris Quinn, Daequan Cook, Earl Barron, Mark Blount and Ricky Davis.

Of the 9 players to play for the Heat tonight, the highest draft choice was D. Cook and R. Davis. (Both were the 21st overall pick) Blount and Lasme were second round draft choices. AND FIVE OTHER PLAYERS WHO WERE NOT EVEN DRAFTED!!!

In all seriousness, the Bucks just lost to a CBA team tonight.

Yeah, they haven't quit on the season!?!

From CNNSI:

The Racine (Wis.) Journal Times mentions Piston's vice president John Hammond (a.k.a. Joe Dumars' right-hand man) as a candidate for the Bucks' vacancy at general manager.

With the way Dumars has built the team I would welcome this. I just hope the owner would stop meddling in personnel decisions.

Works for me. Now if they can only get Derrick Rose in the draft....

At this point, I'm just thrilled they stayed away from Billy King. Stealing someone away from the Pistons seems to be a great move, and he's been with the team for most of their recent run of success. I think it's safe to say the guy knows how Dumars did it, which is good. Getting Derrick Rose would be a dream, but the Bucks would need to luck out and get a Top 2 pick for that to happen, and even getting #2 overall might not do it if Miami or Seattle/Oklahoma City ends up with the #1 pick.

This is a great hire. Oddly enough, it is listed on Espn Insider that the Sixers have been contacted by an eastern conference team for the ability to talk to Larry Brown about a job.

John Hammond has a really big positive and a really big negative when it comes to putting a project together.

Plus side: He helped put together the Pistons team that won 50 games 7 straight years

Down side: Jurassic Park was doomed to fail from the start

wuh

a Wisconsin team actually hires somebody with a good resume and was in fairly high demand?

what the heck is going on 'round here

Step in the right direction for Herb. Carlisle would be a good hire too.l

Stevo[/b]]Not going to act as though I know much about this guy, but I'm sure glad it wasn't Billy King or Babcock. People seem to like the hire, so that's probably a good sign.
To compare to baseball, this is very similar to the Dodgers hiring Paul Depodesta. Learned from one of the best GMs in the game and should be a good one.

This is a really solid pickup. Now hopefully we can find a coach.

I wonder if he has already begun to figure a way out of the mess. You would think that he realizes that the Bucks basically need to start from scratch. He is inheriting an absolute disaster with some awful contracts. It will be interesting to see what he can get accomplished.

Priority #1 should be to get a real point guard, ya know the ones that like to pass the ball. But then again no one on the Bucks really likes to pass.

Bogut likes to pass.

I'd try to move Mo, Redd, and or CV for a another top 5 pick or guy wanting out like Elton Brand maybe? Something like that. . Try to draft OJ Mayo and Derrick Rose. Give Simmons to whoever willing to take him.

Don't draft any foreigners.

I saw this posted elsewhere from SI, it's both funny and sad

The Bucks have created a lot of gossip around the league, as teams do when they're looking for a new coach or GM. The impression I get from several executives is that it's going to be hard to win so long as owner Sen. Herb Kohl doesn't change the way he runs the franchise. At the moment, most of the business of the team is channeled through a couple of attorneys who know little about basketball. But it's common knowledge around the league that former GM Larry Harris, who was let go last month, was forced to run trade proposals through the attorneys, who also offered trade suggestions of their own.

It's hard enough to compete with the likes of Detroit's Joe Dumars and San Antonio's R.C. Buford under normal circumstances, and harder when amateurs occupy a senior role in the basketball administration. Last year the Bucks had Mike Conley in for an impressive predraft workout. "I can't believe this kid shoots the ball so well with his left hand,'' one of the attorneys said to Sen. Kohl.

"It's because he's left-handed,'' Harris said.

If the reports are true that Pistons vice president John Hammond has reached a deal to run the Bucks, then Milwaukee has made a wise hire. But he will have a hard time succeeding without a direct communication line to the owner.

"My understanding is that the senator has people around him who have the power to make decisions but are not held accountable for those decisions,'' says a rival Eastern conference executive.

P.S. The Bucks won't be moving to Seattle

I wonder who the lawyers are? I bet we could probably find out. MIlwaukee's a small town.
