The remaking of the San Francisco Giants

Signing old, overpaid players for years on end always ends the same way. For the Giants, the time is now.

Some Giants scouts have handed out a sheet with close to a dozen players that are available, including Randy Winn, Dave Roberts, Steve Kline, Ray Durham, Rich Aurilia and others. -Peter Gammons

This team could prove to be the ultimate challenge for any GM.

It's going to take at least 5 years of good drafting, proper signings, etc to even be close to competing again. Lincecum is a nice building block to start with. It will be interesting to see who has a better career. Lincecum or Gallardo. I think they will both turn into all stars and put up amazing careers.

This past off season, I remember that they were exploring trading Cain and Lincecum. Is there any way that we could come up with a list of prospects for either one? Maybe a few of our blocked prospects like Gamel, Escobar, and/ or Iribarren(probably not all 3) and maybe Cappy for Cain? Cain would easily be a 15+ win SP with us. A long, overdue youth movement needs to get started there.

They, at one time, were in fact looking into trading Lincecum. (I haven't heard any Cain rumors) The Giants weren't stupid though they were asking for young proven superstar outfielders, Alex Rios and Carl Crawford were the two names I heard of. If the Brewers wanted to try and pry away Lincecum it would take Ryan Braun. So basically no thanks.

Lincecum is a nice building block to start with.

The funny part to me is that by the time the Giants might be ready to compete again, Tim will be in his mid or late 20s - and the team would probably be best served to trade him to help re-stock their system. They could conceivably be contending by then, but dealing Lincecum away after another successful season or two could be the perfect timing. Many feel his delivery is cause for some injury concern as he ages. He's a young stud that to mention trading now sounds foolish, but yikes is that organization in a bad place.

They just signed Roberts last season. I mean, what did they think would happen there?

That may be the best non-signing of the Doug Melvin era.

Heck, why did they sign Rowand? That's the true mystery, as before, they were just trying to win with Bonds.

I think the bigger question is, why did Rowand sign with the Giants? It wasn't a mystery what the team was facing.

I do suspect that Rowand will be flipped at the deadline, either in 2008 or 2009. His contract really isn't that bad and they might be able to get something for him/ship some dead weight out with him. I don't see the Giants doing anything at least until Villalona makes it to MLB.

Rowand got 5 years and 60 million dollars from the Giants, that is why he signed with the team. That is a lot of coin for a player who is a nice two hole hitter, but will be miscast as a middle of the order slugger due to the rather anemic hitters in San Francisco. There was an article in the Tribune a week ago, where Rowand stated that he liked the offer from the White Sox, but ultimately went to SF, because the Sox were unwilling to add a 5th year.

Suppose it's July, Cain is rolling, and the Brewers need to plug a hole in the rotation to make a run this year. The Giants say "LaPorta, and Escobar for Cain."

That's just an example, the names could wind up being different, but that's the sort of thing I could see happening before the Brewers let go of Corey Hart right now.

I doubt LaPorta would interest them, as he is going to be a 1B in a few years and Villalona is also a 1B, and they have a few other interesting names that will also end up being 1B. Cain interests me more than Lincecum, except for the contract situations, but I would have a hard time giving up Corey for them. I could see a "JJ+"-type deal but no Hart.

The thing that worries me about Cain is that his success so far is based upon him limiting homeruns. His Ks are ok, His BBs are a little high, but his HR/9 is driving everything (that and a BABIP below .300). Now this isn't entirely due to playing in SF but that has to help keep his home runs down.

I wonder if they'd take Hart plus a prospect for Cain or Lincecum. ow I'd do that in a heartbeat.

I think the Giants would, too.

I kinda doubt it. Cain's a legit ace. As much as I like Hart, I don't think he's worth a pitcher like Cain.

Not that this is the end all or anything, but BA just had a list of top 25 players 25 years old or younger, a list that only one Brewers, Prince Fielder made. Not Ryan Braun, not Corey Hart, not Gallardo. Matt Cain however did.

I can't imagine that the Giants would be so eager to trade away their only position of strength.

They turned down Alexis Rios for Cain straight up just this past off-season, I can't imagine they'd make a similar trade for Corey, as big a part of the Brewers he's going to be

(Anyway, any list that doesn't have Braun as one of the Top 25 Under 25 is a little questionable)
