Rocco Baldelli has rare illness (Merged... Rocco Baldelli is a Jerk... reply #9) / Boycott Fox Sports

bigredrobbo
First of all I don't see why the two major providers of sports continues to try to go out of their way to annoy people and turn people away from their networks, considering there are so many options for us to get our sports info from. Whether its ESPN's obsession with the sox and yanks, ESPN's "cute" segments, or FOX's completely inappropriate. comments. I don't know how that can get through an editor. I understand writers want to shock people to get readers but there has to be a line. Bravo to you Brian for standing up to FOX.

I stopped watching Baseball Tonight 4-5 years ago, and my blood pressure and heart rate went down almost immediately! I will watch games on espn and of course, FSN, but I won't watch any studio programs on either network. Frankly, I won't watch cable, network, or local news either, unless there is a breaking story. Newspapers are the only way to go for accurate information. And they ain't always so great, either.

Here are the comments hench made in the Fox Article:

Rocco Baldelli is a five-tool player: and those tools are scalpel, knee brace, cane, sling and Ace bandage.

Baldelli has appeared in 127 of a possible 486 games the last three seasons. And - surprise! - he will begin this season on the disabled list. His latest DL-inducing "injury" is exhaustion. Who does he think he is, Mariah Carey? And what is he exhausted from, the off-season?
Baldelli's career mirrors the sad history of the Rays. Just one downer after another. He may be only 26, but after four seasons he has proven two things definitely: he can't stay healthy and he doesn't know the strike zone. He has a career .324 OBP and strikes out four times as much as he walks. In 1,656 career at bats he has drawn only 83 walks. He's exhausted, and he's exhausted the patience of Rays fans, tired of watching him strike out on balls in the dirt.

I read the article, and I too found it to be in extremely poor taste.
However:
I have to ask some questions-
I have not seen Hench refer to Baldelli as a jerk in the article, or on the story at fire joe morgan.
Did Hench say this some place I am not aware of?

It is apparent that Baldelli did come forth and state his disorder 2 days before Hench posted his rant. Poor taste no matter what.

I'm with you Brian. That whole article was trash, they tried to play it up at the top of the page by naming it "Henchman's Hitlist" or something stupid.

And in regards to the comments on the previous page:

Using a "Penthouse Pet" to do the weather isn't the problem. The problem is that they make a big deal out if it on the broadcast, which makes it a ridiculous and somewhat insulting publicity attempt.

I can't say that I won't be watching FSN broadcasts, but I don't watch their news channel and certainly won't go to their sports website.

I'm still not sure of the Penthouse problem myself, though I realize it is off-topic. As I said, a Penthouse model can make a living in any variety of ways, and I wish her the best. I thought maybe she was naked but "covered" by Fox's moving black bars or something. As long as she was dressed, I see no problem with it.

And yes, the Fox morning show always has some of the prettiest gals in the business (or possibly, they have less of an issue "showing them off"). The current weekday host, Gretchen Carlson, is a former pageant winner who is rather plain by comparison.

As for Rocco, I'd say he was just unaware. I don't think it was mean, just sort of misinformed.

I don't think the issue is that she is a model. The problem is that they let her do the weather because she is a model, and probably made a big deal out of it. Overall, it's kindof unprofessional in my opinion.

To hell with Fox Sports. Bob and Jim are better anyways.

even if the thought is that he wasn't being malicious but just being a sloppy reporter, i think that's still a problem. Fox Sports is gigantic and has the infinite resources to hire capable, skilled writers, any of whom would be thrilled to work for someone as big as Fox. yet here they are, not making any effort at all or targeting the lowest common denominator by publishing the drivel of goons like this guy.

i used to write for a smallish trade magazine. there, if i wrote that, i'd have been lucky to keep my job if i gave that to my editor, let alone have it published. apparently at Fox, they give you your own column.

I'd have to agree with Al: I doubt Hench had a vile mentality when he wrote it. He probably could have done 15 seconds of research on Baldelli before he wrote it, but I'd say he's just clueless.

I'm not sure about that. If you read the rest of the article, it pretty much defines vile mentality. The name of the 'column' is Henchman's Hit List.

I actually think he was misinformed and being a jerk.

I guess if I was a parent and my kids were watching the weather with me at 7am and asked "What's a Penthouse Pet", it would be a tad uncomfortable to say that they're women who get naked so that lonely men could satisfy themselves. But then again, I'm old-fashioned that way.
Yeah, some people without kids have a hard time understanding how hard it is to watch TV with young children at times. My son is almost 10 so it's not as bad as when he was a few years younger, but there no matter when you watch TV you can't get away from certain subjects. Watching sports and there are always Viagra and Cialis commercials. Watch TBS and your inindated with racy Sex in the City commercials. Watch just about any station and there is some reference to sex or riske scene promoting some upcoming program. There seems to be no guidlines in regards to when these types of commercials are run.

It almost seems like you're thinking I'm talking about legal vs. illegal. I don't wish this person ill-will, it's her choice to choose whatever career she chooses. However, when a national cable news channel decides to glorify that particular profession by specifically inviting Penthouse Pets to do the weather all week, I find it immoral. I'm not forcing this view on anyone else, I'm just saying that because of that, I don't want to watch it anymore.

I too felt that voicing my opinion would be in my best interest, so I submitted the following:

To whom it may concern:

Being an avid baseball fan, I have seen a lot of backlash in refrence to an article written by your very own Kevin Hench. Hench felt it appropriate to lambaste Rocco Baldelli for injuries. Baldelli only two days before Hench released his rant, went public with details of a disease he contracted.
Hench's disregard to check facts, and take child like pot shots at someone is not tolerable in my mind. I would have thought that by now your site would have removed the poorly timed and inappropriate article. You have not.
Is there an oversight on the part of Fox Sports? Do you care about such remarks? I am disappointed in your organization. I would very much like to see Hench apologize to Baldelli and the Tampa Bay Baseball Club. I would also feel that Hench should face disciplinary action.
I will no longer visit your site if these kind of attacks continue.

The author obviously didn't know the real story with Baldelli. He's an incompetent hack, as also evidenced by his quasi-article/blurb style filled with cheap one-liners. I believe "Hench" is best known for being a buddy of Bill Simmons. I don't think an all-out boycott of Fox Sports is warranted, but their website is a different story. Take that, Jay Mohr.

I don't want to burst your bubble of weather person integrity but a large portion of the weather readers you see on the news are really just models who can read a teleprompter. Hiring a hot weather girl is an old TV news gimmick. How do you think Jillina Barberie ended up doing the weather? Seriously, even the local news channels try to hire a pretty woman with absolutely no weather or meteorlogical background to just read the teleprompter. It is also becoming the thing to do for news readers as well. Check out the morning news shows on CNN or just about any channel and they will have good looking former models and beauty queens reading the news not necessarily journalists or hard hitting reporters.

Yeah, I'm not sure what you guys have in Milwaukee, but on Green Bay stations we have Tom Mahoney and George Graphos...not exactly beauty queens. I understand that when it happens it's a TV gimmick, but there's nothing wrong with saying that the gimmick is unprofessional. I'd be a little ticked if I studied and worked as hard as a meteorologist has to (no jokes please) and I was told that some hot girl with no weather knowledge is going to go on TV to tell the people what I found.

I would also be a little ticked if I was an attractive woman that put in all of that same study and hard work, only to find out that most people think I only have my job based on attractiveness because Fox News does it that way.

As for Hench...seriously, if you write a column called Hench's Hitlist, and all you do is bash players, you lead a sorry life. I'm not sure how a person can do something like that and take pride in his work.

If I had Braun's pee in my fridge I'd tell everybody.

Yes, Ms. Bundy was a very attractive and inept weather gal on one episode.

When I was growing up, the NBC affiliate in Madison hired a stand-up comedian to be the weekend weather guy, and the irony here is, he wasn't a licensed weather person, and he wasn't very funny either. But, he could read a forecast and a weather warning as good as the next guy, if i would not have read it in the paper, I never would have known.

As for Fox and Friends, I long for the days of the lovely (albeit very thin) Juliet Huddy (now on the Fox early show), but this morning Ainsley Earhardt may have made me forget about all other women for at least a few days. In keeping with the rules, I will not link to an image, but golly.

You kinda went from not liking sports shows and the coverage they get to a far more serious issue calling into question the integrity of American Journalist. The truth is, the American Media is the best media in the world. I hear all the complaining about how Fox News will run stories on Anna Nicole, and that's annoying, but in an era of 24 hour news channels, you're going to get some of that.

By the way Brian, did they identify the Weather Girl as a Penthouse Pet?

Yes, in fact they had Penthouse Pets on specifically all week, I believe.
