MLB 2K8 - Wii

Chio151

I picked up 2K8 last night for the Wii and I'm very pleased. I had been waiting for a baseball sim to come out for the Wii for quite some time. The main issue with baseball games, in my mind, is that as the graphics and technology increased the control schemes became less and less intuitive. That changes with the Wii.

Learning to swing and watch the pitch come of the pitchers hand is fun yet challenging. You need to get into a groove. If you start your swing and pull back on the controller you can check your swing.

Pitching is also enjoyable starting with pointing at the screen for targeting, windup and delivery that effects the location. The better your form and timing the more accurate the pitch. To me, this is baseball.

Anyone else pick this up?

It will never be Baseball Stars, but we may be entering a new golden era in baseball games.

I have MLB Power Pros, but haven't gotten into it much. Probably because I got a Wii in November with Wii Sports, then all of a sudden got 5 games for Christmas. I spent the first couple weeks playing Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Spent a couple days play Super Mario Galaxy. A week playing MLB Power Pros and a few weeks playing Madden 2008. I also got Wii Play with the extra remote which I've played once. And I only play the Wii about 3 hrs/week, if that, but hope to get into it a little more since I have more time now.

Back on topic...

I think I would like the realism of 2k8 over the cartoonism of Power Pros.

I've played 2 games of MLB 2K8 for the xbox 360 and have enjoyed it much more thank MLB 2k7. It takes a little bit getting used to the new controls, but it's a lot more intuitive than pressing "A" to throw a fastball.

I had this preordered and love it. The pitching is really fun. The only real problem is I've had a couple times I took a full swing and it check it. Other than that, it is really fun. Corey Hart is very underrated though.

At first glance when you fire up a game of 2k8 for Wii you think, "this looks terrible". Once you start playing though you completely forget about what the game looks like because it becomes so fun and challening to actually stare down a hitter or try to figure out what pitch is coming and where so you can get a decent hit. Swinging the bat is very realistic and challenging in the higher difficulty levels. If you start a franchise I suggest the variable difficulty setting because I started mine on pro and scored 24 runs and hit about 10 homers but then the next game it raised the difficulty and I only won 6-3.

As for the Brewers in the game, they are severly underrated. I think they start out as the 23rd ranked team or something around that number. Corey Hart is terrible, Cameron isn't on the team (he's in free agents), Braun is still a 3rd baseman, and Hall is still listed as CF. I increased the stats for Prince, Braun, and Hart. Made the potential of several of the guys higher and made Yovanni a tad bit better. After I was all done the team ended up as 6th best, which might be a little high but with the variable difficulty setting on the game will just make it harder on me anyways.

All in all the game is tons of fun. Beware though there is no online play, apparently no roster updates, no minor league teams (only a limited number of minor league players), and you can only play 1 on 1 for multiplayer options. None of those were deal breakers for me. This is the only sim that's not a cartoon for the Wii. All things considered I would definitely recommend the game.

I rented 2K8 this weekend for the Wii. Man is my arm tired. I like it ok. I totally agree on Hart and Hardy is underrated to some extent too. Braun and Prince are both beasts though.

I still haven't really figured out the hitting. I swing about 90% of the time because I have a hard time telling what's in and out of the strike zone (any advice on pitchers tipping their pitches would be great!). I'm still winning a lot of games by hitting A LOT of home runs with Braun.

I too have had a few check swings that were intended to be full swings. The base running could be better too. Also, the CPUs defense is ridiculous. I think Beltran pulled back 3 homers from me in 1 game.

You don't have an Adam Wainwright. Easily the best gentlemen in all of sports. You don't have the amount of real good old American men like the Cardinals do. Holliday, Wainwright, Skip, Berkman those 4 guys are incredible people

Agreed. This is my one complaint. EVERY outfielder can routinely catch Willie Maysesque catches running backwards into the wall. Also, the hitting probability should be a little more random for placement. If you don't directional hit, way too many balls go into centerfield. Also, very few foul balls.
