If you hold Yost to his word, it kind of takes the excitement out of the "pitching competition" this spring when he basically makes it sound like no matter how well Villy and Manny pitch or how poorly Bush/Vargas/Cappy pitch, that what they do in the spring really doesn't matter - it all comes down to experience and "track record". Does this bother anyone else?

No, because I value track record over the 5-6 outings of spring training. But I know that I am in the minority. Upside means everything apparently and experience is worth nothing. We should have all young guys on the field and in the bullpen. Manny should get 34 starts and pitch 210+ innings or until he grabs his arm in pain. Capuano will Never win another game and Vargas should just be traded for two bushels peanuts or the 279th pick in the 2010 draft, which ever is the best offer considering the value of the peanut commodity at that time.

On a serious note, here's what my rotation would be if the opener were tomorrow

Sheets, Suppan, Capuano, Villanueva, Bush. Capuano because a lefty is needed, Bush because his K to BB ratio is normally good. and Villanueva because his track record last year COMBINED with his spring training so far says he WILL succeed as a #5. Vargas to the Pen as long relief and Manny to AAA and to be summoned upon injured. When Gallardo gest back, Bush can get pushed somewhere else. Bottom line, is this team will have to either stockpile the SP in AAA or trade them. There doesnt appear to be more than 1 spot in the bullpen with the likes of Gagne, Turnbow, Riske, Shouse, Mota, Torres out there anyhow.

Damn Weeks sure gets hit by a lot of pitches in the course of a season.... Its not like he leans over the plate.....I dont get it.... plus now another Steal..

Maybe it's the bat waggle... does Gary Sheffield get hit a lot as well?

Personally, I love the back and forth on the rotation controversy. Spring training is drawn out and rather boring but this keeps it interesting.

I agree with that, I just was hoping that Yost would seem more open minded about the possiblilty of Manny or Villy supplanting one of the 3-headed/5+ era monster of Vargas/Cappy/Bush. Its not like Parra and Villy haven't shown that they are capable of pitching at the major league level. I have nothing against any of those 3 veterans - I would love to see Cappy get back to his old self and I think maybe Bush would be better off in the pen
