Hot Wings!

brewcrewreview

Several friends of mine and myself love to indulge in the wonderful tastes of cold beer of hot wings.

Here is a rundown of our favorite places and weekly rituals:

Monday's: Champp's. Six wings for two bucks and there is a choice between five very good sauces, buffalo being the best.

Tuesday's: Leff's Lucky Town: Seven wings for two bucks. My friends and I agree that these are the best wings in the area. Their hot wings are amazing! We recently went to Wingfest in Chicago and Leff's wings were better than all twenty-some bars there.

Thursday's: BW3. Nothing too special here but it is 50 cent boneless night. My favorite sauces are the spicy garlic and the hot.

Other wings we have enjoyed are Coaches, Steny's, and Goolsby's.

We would like to try some new places for wings as well. Does anyone here have any suggestions???

Points East pub (on Jackson St., near the Points East Pick 'n Save and right down the road from the Why Not) on Thursday has all you can eat wings and they are often voted the best in the city by area publications. I strongly recommend you check it out. Points East also has live music, or at least they used to.

The owners of Club Garibaldi on the South side of town (on the corner of Superior and Russell right across the street from the Palomino and Cactus Club) are from Points East and they brought the wing recipe with them. Same great wings, along with some other good food on their menu to go along with some pretty tasty beers on tap. They too have an all-you-can-eat wing night, but I don't remember what night it is.

Points East has the BEST wings I have ever eaten. Ever. I have eaten more than my fair share of wings. I might call them and see who they get those distributed from. We aren't going to take away their business here in Sin City, so I wonder if they would divulge that info.

Edit: Points East Pub is on the corner of Jackson and Lyon. I actually used to live right across the street, a couple houses down.

Brother's down on Water Street has 10 cent wings every Wednesday starting after 9pm. The actual wings aren't the greatest size, but I'd take the sauce hands down over anything I've ever had before.

Leff's musta recently went up in price (within the past 3 or 4 months i guess, they started having problems with their wing night, mostly the crowd that it was bringing in, which could be why)

but while I don't like Leff's as a bar that much anymore, I can't deny that their wings are probably the best in town. Point's East is the only bar I'd need to compare them too, but still haven't gotten there. Brother's wing night is pretty good, but do you need to show some kinda student ID for that deal to work? I don't think I did the few times I was there, but I was also with a friend in school, so I can't remember.

BBC (North and Farwell) has .25 wings on Thursdays, as well as Trivia. I've been going for quite awhile, and its always a good time.

In the dells area (and Madison too I would guess) Pedro's Mexican Restaurant makes a tasty wing. I'm kind of girly so I'll wash them down with a margarita. They're not a deal like some of the other places that've been mentioned, but well worth the price.

And Madison's Quaker Steak & Lube has a huge variety of wings. They've got an atomic wing that you need to sign a waiver to order. Never had 'em though-- yeah it's the I'm kind of a girl thing.

mmm... all of these places on the East Side aren't too far from where I am now... I've had BBC and Brothers wings before, but not Points East. I'll have to swing by when it's warmer (I'd rather walk) and check it out with my friends.

The wing quality at Points East can suffer on Thursdays since it is all you can eat and they are just pounding them out. I'd recommend going there on a different day to get a better taste.

the thing about wing places that I want to know is where they get there wings from? When I try to make wings at home, they are never the same as BW3 or a bar. I always have to buy those frozen wings and drummettes in the ice glaze that end up looking huge, but when you cook them (grill, oven, whatever) they are just a little bit of meat with tons of fat and extra skin.

At BW3 or a bar, you get nice smallish wings and drummettes with plenty of meat and hardly any fat and or extra skin. Add the sauce and they're great.

Do it at home and they're a bunch of sauce and hardly any meat.

Do you have to fry them in oil? Do they get special chicken wings/drummettes? Why can't I replicate it at home?

Our wings are pretty dang tasty if you ask me - and we get ours from a restaurant distributor out here. Basically they come frozen in big bags, not unlike something you might see at a grocery store. We go through a specific thawing process and then of course drop them in the fryer until golden brown, toss them in whatever flavor you want and presto.

I also live a block from the BBC, I'll have to give those a chance too... but there's no way they will top Points East. Points East is the best by far. I wasn't even a "wing guy" and they converted me.

I cannot believe I am the first to mention the BEST wings, the WOW Wingery just south of the BBC

They have at least 12 kinds including my favorite, the Italian wings with olive oil and parmesan

The Corner used to (maybe still do?) have a special on Wednesday, From 6pm-10pm $12.50 will get you all the wings you can eat and all the tap beer you can drink I had 27 wings and 4 beers one fateful night, fast forward to 2am, I am puking it all up at Timbuktu in Riverwest after a Irish Car Bomb

*edit*

The WOW wingery has closed, I didn't get the word out quick enough!

Pitchleague, as Bullox, mentioned the answer is to deep fry them. Let'em thaw for a day or so. Then crank up the oil and let 'er rip. We'll be bringing the deep fryer with us on opening day for just that purpose. Hot wings and opening day, I can't wait.

I've gone to BW3's almost every Tuesday for about 2 years now, it's .40 wing night (it was .20 when we started going), and they have a happy hour from 3-9 so the beers are cheap...and there are a ton on tap. Probably close to 20. I've had every single flavor there, multiple times, and I'd have go with these hot BBQ, Asian Zing and Honey BBQ.

There seems to be a lot of wing fanatics here so I'd like to share this.

Jason King is a guy who writes for Yahoo Sports.

Every week he puts out an excellent column about

sports, his favorite females, and manly food. He pays

a lot of respect to pro wrestling too, which gains

respect from me.

He is a huge fan of wings and always writes about all

of the different foods, particularly wings, that he

tries all over the country.

A couple of weeks ago in his article, he wrote about

his wing pet peeves. I thought it was clever.

Here it goes:

Other than Nancy Grace, not many things in life annoy

me. But you wouldn't have guessed that a few nights

ago at Arizona's sports bar in Kansas City. As if

watching my Baylor Bears blow a seven-point overtime

lead against Oklahoma wasn't bad enough, my buddy,

Brett Hunter, called my attention to an even more

repulsive sight.

A girl eating wings with a fork.

We tried our best to keep quiet, but eventually Brett

and I had to vocalize our displeasure. You don't spit

into the wind, you don't pull the mask off of Zorro

and you don't, under any circumstance, eat wings with

a fork. Period.

Anyway, the whole fork issue sparked a lively

conversation at our table about "Wing Pet Peeves."

Here are a few of mine:

1. If you're only going to take one or two bites off

of each wing, then order something else. I can't

explain how irritating it is for a wing-lover to look

at someone's plate and see half-eaten drummies, with

hunks of chicken and other residue hanging from the

bone. Seriously: Come to play, or don't come at all.

2. I can't stand small wings. If you're a cook or a

waitress, don't even bring them to the table. Last

night I ordered 12 wings at a certain "chain"

restaurant not named Hooters, and four of them were no

bigger than my pinky finger. It's not that they taste

bad, but no one likes leaving hungry - or feeling

ripped-off.

3. What's with all these restaurants charging for blue

cheese and, in some cases, celery? It makes you want

to find a manager and say, "Hey, guy. Business really

that bad?" Pretty soon they'll be asking us to pay for

the Wet-Naps we use to wash the sauce off our hands.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd think that ensuring that a

customer had an enjoyable experience would, in the

long run, go way further than the 50 cents the

restaurant demanded for its dipping sauce.

4. Spicy garlic is fine. So are chili lime, Cajun and

teriyaki. I'm all for different types of flavors and

sauces when it comes to wings - unless it involves

honey. Sorry, kids, but wings are not supposed to be

sweet. All these "honey-glazed" and "honey bbq" wings

have got to go.

5. False advertising. Unless there is something

original about your bird, don't hail your

establishment as a "wing place." There's nothing worse

than walking into a place like BuffaLouie's in

Bloomington or Jefferson's in Lawrence, only to find

the same, run-of-the-mill wings they have at any

sports bar. To truly tout yourself as a wing

establishment, the wings need to have some character.

Are they big, are they grilled, are they big and

grilled? Whaddya got?
