Questions of habit...

jaybird2001wi

Different people do different and miniscule things throughout an average day that could set us all apart according to our everyday regular habits. I have wondered how people do everyday things...

1) When doing laundry, do you put the detergent in first or last?
I used to put it in last, but realized the logic of putting it in first. Now I always put it in first.
2) On your landline phone, do you let the phone ring twice before answering?
I guess its the way I was brought up to allow it to ring twice.
3) When you are ready to make a phone call with a landline, do you check to see if the line is busy regardless of if anyone else is in the house using another phone?
I just pick up the phone and dial.
4) When at a gas station, do you count the change that is given back to you? Or do you just put it in your pocket and go without counting it at all?
Depends on the cashier
5) When you are driving, do you use your turning signal every opportunity that you lawfully need to use it? Or do you not use it when in a quiet neighborhood when no one else is around?
I use it all the time.
6) When calling someone up on their cell phone, do you usually leave a message or do you not because your name or number will show up on the ID anyway?
I hate leaving voicemails, it seems like I am talking to myself on it.
7) At a sporting event, do you wait until the game or match has a "dead air" moment to get up to use the restroom or buy food?
I wait until the middle of inning, etc. to do what I need to do, it is just plain good etiquette.
8) When you are hungry for something that you obviously don't have in your cupboards or fridge, do you usually check anyway in hopes it will "magically appear?"
I do it most of the time when it is at the end of the week when I have eaten most of the food.
9) At your job, do you usually keep your daily agenda in your head or write it down?
I work a lot, and have a set system in place that I memorized, so no need to write anything down.
10) When you are using an ATM, do you sit there and hope and pray you get the cash you need even if you know you have sufficient funds in your account?
I am a bit paranoid about ATMs and my checking account sometimes, so I always wait and hope for some reason.

1. Detergent goes first. Unless you enjoy going into some place with a black light and looking like you peed yourself.

2. I don't have a landline, but I let my cell ring most of the way through because my ringer in Red, Red, Wine.

3. See #2

4. I normally don't count the change. It depends on the situation...if it's a lot of change I might count it, but if there's someone behind me I'll step off to the side and count it.

5. I use my signal pretty much all the time, but I don't go so far as to use it in parking lots or when there's a 90 degree curve and the only option is to turn right.

6. I always figure my name and number will show up, so sometimes I won't leave a message. It depends on the person.

7. I always wait for some kind of down time during sporting events to do anything. I usually try to find the times that everyone else isn't going to be rushing the bathroom. For example, if the Brewers are on defense and the other team's 7-8-9 hitters are up, I might make a run for the bathroom.

8. When you are hungry for something that you obviously don't have in your cupboards or fridge, do you usually check anyway in hopes it will "magically appear?"

I pretty much always do this. I just did last night.

9. I've noticed I'm more productive if I write it down, but mostly I keep it in my head. That system got me 2 college degrees, so I think I'm fine for now. The problem is when I get older and my memory is fading, so I should probably start using a planner more regularly now.

10. About this last question, I'm a little different because I work for the financial institution where my checking account is, so I can pretty much access my account any time I want.

If I had Braun's pee in my fridge I'd tell everybody.

1) Detergent in first, usually, but I don't think I've made a habit of doing it.

2) I let it ring for as many rings as it takes me to get to the phone, usually.

3) I usually check to make sure IF someone is in the house, but if I'm home alone, I'll pick up and dial.

4) Just put it in my pocket and get going -- I always feel rude if I'm at the counter for too long after my transaction has been completed.

5) I don't use it in my subdivision because it's out in the boonies and no one is ever around, but otherwise I'll always use it.

6) If my purpose for calling was pretty important, I'll leave a message, but I usually just leave the missed-call on their phone. Most people tend to call back.

7) I'll wait for a break in the action to get up, but I rarely get up during a sporting event anyways -- I hate missing anything.

8) I always pray for magical things to happen as far as food goes, so yes.

9) I usually can keep track of my daily agenda in my head, but my job is pretty simple, so that's no huge feat.

10) As I said in my answer to question #8, I always hope and pray for magical things when it comes to money, with the magic being money in my account.

Amen to this. I believe that you should be docked life points for getting up & obstructing others' views mid-inning/mid-AB. This is a very rude thing to do imho. Obviously there are extenuating circumstances where you have to make exceptions, but 95%+ of these occurances should have been avoided. It's mostly people being too ignorant/arrogant imo.

2/3. dont have one

4. only bills

5. only use the blinker when completely necessary, or if i see a cop around

6. rarely leave a message

7. i usually wait for a dead spot, but if i am drunk and have to pee really bad, i will go at any time, but i will apologize 1000 times on the way

8. absolutely

10. if anything, i hope they mistakingly give me extra money

1. Detergent/bleach in first. It's a moot point for me cos we have a front-loading washer. If you don't put it in first, you don't put it in.

2. Don't have one... usually just however long it takes to get there.

3. If someone else is there, I would make a cursory check.

4. I haven't paid cash for something in I don't know how long... unless it looks obviously off, I wouldn't count it.

5. I use my turn signal all the time. There's no reason not to, it's like 3-5 inches from your left hand.

6. Voicemail if it's someone I've never called before and/or if they won't know why I'm calling. But if it's just like calling to say hello to my mom or something, eh.

7. I try my best not to use the bathroom at a sporting event. I'm paying to see the teams play, not to use the bathroom. If I have to go, I wait to get around other people until there's a break in the action.

8. More than once a day. I live within 2 minutes of 3 grocery stores, tho. If I really want something, it's not a hassle.

9. In my mind. The stuff I write down is usually to remember for after work.

10. No... I always know within $40-50 bucks how much money I have. Yay for OCD! I'm more paranoid about the machine not giving me the money - one time I tried to take out $200 and half of it got stuck half inside the machine. I had to get down on my hands and knees and pry it out in the middle of a busy convenience store.

1) I'm married -- I wouldn't do the laundry on a dare

2, 3) I only have a cell phone

4) I never count it.

5) I use my blinker all the time

6) If I am just calling to chit-chat, or don't have a specific message I assume the caller ID is good enough

7) I rarely buy food during a game -- I came there to watch a game, not eat -- I try to be sensitive that my rowmates do not want my large ass squeezing past them, probably ever.

8) Sure

9) I never write things down

10) I rarely use ATMs although sometimes ATMs are out of money, so I can understand the hesitation.

1) When doing laundry, do you put the detergent in first or last?

Usually last. I just kinda slosh it all over the clothes w/o measuring it and then I get yelled at for doing it that way.

2) On your landline phone, do you let the phone ring twice before answering?

Nah. Whenever I get it is when I get it.

3) When you are ready to make a phone call with a landline, do you check to see if the line is busy regardless of if anyone else is in the house using another phone?

Nope. Just dial the bad boy. I guess that with cordless phones this question is kinda moot because only one phone can work at a time.

4) When at a gas station, do you count the change that is given back to you? Or do you just put it in your pocket and go without counting it at all?

Wherever I use cash, I count it before leaving the counter. I'll return overages and question shortages.

5) When you are driving, do you use your turning signal every opportunity that you lawfully need to use it? Or do you not use it when in a quiet neighborhood when no one else is around?

I guess just when pedestrians or other vehicles are around.

6) When calling someone up on their cell phone, do you usually leave a message or do you not because your name or number will show up on the ID anyway?

Message. Voice message. I do not text, ever.

7) At a sporting event, do you wait until the game or match has a "dead air" moment to get up to use the restroom or buy food?

I wait for a time that is not likely to have too much action.

8) When you are hungry for something that you obviously don't have in your cupboards or fridge, do you usually check anyway in hopes it will "magically appear?"

No. Not really. I will however, look 2-3 times for something interesting and then complain there's nothing to eat. Mary will ask what I want, and I reply "I don't know."

9) At your job, do you usually keep your daily agenda in your head or write it down?

I'm self employeed at the moment, so I pretty much am the only one to keep track of. This situation allows me to need little written notes if any at all.

10) When you are using an ATM, do you sit there and hope and pray you get the cash you need even if you know you have sufficient funds in your account?

No. I used to do that because of poor record keeping. However, I'm pretty good at record keeping now especially financially, so I need not worry at all about my end of things. The machine on the other hand.....

-I used to have a neat-o signature, but it got erased.

1. huh? first or last matters? doesn't it all just get mixed up with the water?

2. I don't have a landline phone.

3. n/a

4. change goes straight to the pocket. seems rude to stand right there like the counter-dude doesn't know how to count. plus a missing dime here or there doesn't really matter.

5. only use signal when a car is nearby.

6. i'll only leave a phone message if the call is rather important, otherwise i'll hang up and assume they'll see i called.

7. i usually wait for some dead time in the game to get food because i don't like to miss the action.

8. i don't look for specific foods, but more something that would fill whatever sweet/sour/salty jones i have at the moment.

9. the boss has requested that i start writing things down from now on.

10. it always surprises me how much money i have in my account. it's like Christmas, but if Christmas were a horrible, horrible holiday.

1. My mom taught me to put it in last. I learned that was wrong in college (from friends, not a class). Now it goes in first.

2-3. No landline

4. Never ever count change.

5. I used to use my signal ALL the time. I now live in Illinois (as my name suggests), and find myself using it less and less.

6. Only leave a voice mail if necessary, otherwise it's just common sense to call me back, right?

7. I try to wait to use the restroom at breaks, but I seem to have to "go" at an above average frequency.

8. No

9. Write it down when I'm busy (summer months).

10. I've never balanced my check book, but I know about how much I have (thank you on-line banking)

You don't have an Adam Wainwright. Easily the best gentlemen in all of sports. You don't have the amount of real good old American men like the Cardinals do. Holliday, Wainwright, Skip, Berkman those 4 guys are incredible people

1) When doing laundry, do you put the detergent in first or last?

I always let it fill a little bit and then put the detergent in.

2) On your landline phone, do you let the phone ring twice before answering?

When I had a land line, wait till caller id. Yes I call screen.

3) When you are ready to make a phone call with a landline, do you check to see if the line is busy regardless of if anyone else is in the house using another phone?

Pshaw.. get off my phone.

4) When at a gas station, do you count the change that is given back to you? Or do you just put it in your pocket and go without counting it at all?

Nope never do. I figure the fancy displays show exact coins and bills.

5) When you are driving, do you use your turning signal every opportunity that you lawfully need to use it? Or do you not use it when in a quiet neighborhood when no one else is around?

Nope, I'll use it in traffic and turns. But if I'm changing lanes and no cars around.. whatever. I'm sure once a cop busts me I'll be boned.

6) When calling someone up on their cell phone, do you usually leave a message or do you not because your name or number will show p on the ID anyway?

Depends who it is. Friend, nah they'll call me back if they want. Or i'll text em afterwards. Others, I'll leave a short message.

7) At a sporting event, do you wait until the game or match has a "dead air" moment to get up to use the restroom or buy food?

Yes. I'll wait at the end of the isle till we are in between batters or innings. I hate when people walk in front of you during a big at bat.

8) When you are hungry for something that you obviously don't have in your cupboards or fridge, do you usually check anyway in hopes it will "magically appear?"

All the time. More looking for inspiration.

9) At your job, do you usually keep your daily agenda in your head or write it down?

Heck no, maybe I should.

10) When you are using an ATM, do you sit there and hope and pray you get the cash you need even if you know you have sufficient funds in your account?

Haha.. not any more. But younger years, yes.

1. Laundry. . .I have a front loading machine, so the detergent goes in a separate area. When I use a top-loader, I start the water, add the detergent, agitate it around so it mixes well, then add clothes at the end. Too often I've ended up with detergent burnout streaks in clothes.

2/3. Landline phone. . .Don't have one.

4. Gas Station. . .I always use a credit card to add to Midwest Airlines Frequent Flier miles. Pay at the pump. It also keeps me away from buying expensive Diet Coke and Snickers bars.

5. I use my turn signal all the time. That way, it's just a natural thing, and not something I have to consciously think about.

6. Sometimes I leave a message, other times not. When I really need to tell/ask someone something, I leave a message. When I'm calling just to see what's up. . .I don't. If they choose to listen to the message, great. . .if not, that's fine, too.

7. At a game, I wait for a break in the action to do my thing. I also try to sit on an aisle, for the legroom. When I'm on the aisle, I'm not so much concerned with other people, but I also am usually into the game, and don't get up for fear of missing something.

8. When I'm hungry for something I know I don't have, I'll look in the refrigerator/cabinet, but only to find a suitable substitute. I buy all our food and do all the cooking, so I generally have a fair understanding of what's in there.

9. I always write down what I plan to do, so I can refer to my list when there's deadtime, to make sure I'm on target.

10. I'm pretty sure that I'm getting the money I need from my ATM. If not, there's usually one 5 minutes away. It's usually a matter of the machine being out of money, or under service, etc.

...not to mention the impulse to buy smokes (at least me) that you regret buying four seconds later. I only wish Snikers bars were my addiction.

in regards to gas stations, would you all say you've left more pennies or taken more pennies? I leave anything but quarters, so i've definitely given more than I've taken. or took. maybe tooked.

I neither take nor leave pennies. I'm puzzled by the whole concept. My transaction with a store is mine, and mine alone. I'm responsible to pay every part of my bill--not to grab from a pool of change that others have left for me (and others). On the other side of the "coin"--pardon the pun--I'm not responsible to contribute to the community pool. I pay taxes, I contribute to charities, I'm a generous tipper & I make other contributions to the society at large. I draw the line at a dirty tray of pennies.

When I was younger and poorer, I used to save up my coins, roll them, and exchange them for currency, which my wife and I would spend without regrets. It might be for some gourmet food items, or dinner out, or whatever. I suspect my disdain for the penny pot may stem from that experience, which was frugal, fun, and a happy part of my young adulthood.

Now I'm just crusty, miserly and bitter.

1. I usually have to pour it all on a particularly dirty item, then put in said item in. So.... last?

2. No landline since 2002

3. No landline since 2002

4. I have never paid cash for gasoline, ever.

5. I signal all the time, to the point of being made fun of. I signal in parking lots, and in exit only lanes.

6. Text Message! It's awesome

7. I try not to sit near anyone, which is now much much harder at Brewer games.

8. No, but I will try repeatedly to turn on the TV when the power is out.

9. All my work comes to me in written graphic request forms, so, written down I guess.

10. I have never doubted money coming out of that machine for me.

1. I always put detergent in first. I believe it says so on the box.
2. The Caller ID shows up at the second ring, so I pick it up then.
3. I take a half-second to check for usage or voice mail.
4. I can count the change as he/she is taking it out of the register.
5. I use my signal 80%-90% of the time.
6. I don't call friends on their cell.
7. I always wait between innings or TV timeouts.
8. I don't have those kind of cravings.
9. Keep an agenda in my head.
10. Never had a problem with ATMs.
