The Show '08

Chkyhks2and0

It's terrible. One thing I've been hoping & wishing for is to somehow get myself a job working on those player skill ratings. It just seems like they craft players' hitting talent to fit roughly what they did in the season prior. Just look at Braun's talent v. LHP -- he's maxed out or nearly so in both contact & power. No consideration that what he did v. LHP in 2007 isn't sustainable for anyone, just slap those talent ratings on him.

I've felt for a couple years now that if you just used the TangoTiger fan scouting reports, you'd get way more accurate talent ratings than the studios provide (clearly not perfect). I've just been grateful that recently the games started allowing you to modify the talent ratings. The first thing I do when I get the new The Show is to go through the rosters & 'normalize' them. Sure, I'm bound to make plenty of mistakes & also miss some guys, but it's sure a heckuva lot more accurate than the factory settings.

I'm not quite sure I understand the categories for pitchers.

How can a pitcher have good control and velocity, along with good break on his pitches, but be terrible in K/9, BB/9, HR/9, and H/9? Wouldn't these things depend more on what kind of pitches they throw? I think that's my biggest gripe about this game. It places way too much value for intangibles.

If I had Braun's pee in my fridge I'd tell everybody.

I was going to make a thread in the minor leagues section but I'll see if I get any response here first. I'm a dork about it and like to edit the batting stances to be as realistic as possible. Anyone have any insight on Laporta, Escobar, Gamel or any of our prospects as far as their batting stances or anything like that? Also, what pitches do some of the prospects have? (Pena, Jeffess, etc)

I never play RTTS because of the ridiculous roster moves that are made. I prefer franchise and have full control of my roster and line-up, etc

I got my hat from this game today. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif The hat is actually pretty nice. Too bad it is a Braves hat and not a Brewers one.

I've pretty much been cruising along in my season mode. I love playing in Houston with the predominantly right-handed Brewers, lots of HR opportunities. lol. It is too bad we don't play there full time.

I do second the earlier notion that Prince is easier to hit HR's with than Braun, I actually have more HR's with Hart, too. I've hit one home run with Kendall and I don't think he'll ever even reach the warning track again. Craig Counsell has more home runs (2 to 1)!

I'm finding home runs to be annoying. Everytime I hit one I have to cross my fingers that the game won't freeze. For some reason, every so often, I'll hit a home run and the hitter will just sit there and the plate and won't run the bases. I can hit START and just go to END GAME, but then the home run doesn't get recorded. All these stupid blips are annoying the crap out of me.

I haven't had this problem...yet.

There is one thing that I really annoy about the game and it's certain infield pop ups. This has cost me a few runs when I'm pitching, but there might be a way around it. If a hitter hits an infield pop up between 1st and 2nd (or a variety of other spots) I get the catcher as the fielder and I have to try and get him to the ball before it drops for a hit. Is there a button to switch the "default" fielder the game gives you? Sometimes Rickie, JJ, or Prince bail out my catcher, but one of the last games I played the ball dropped and I had the bases loaded, with two outs, and two runs ended up scoring.

I think it's either L1 or L2 that will switch to the player closest to the ball. Or maybe one of the R's. I don't know, it should be somewhere in the directions under fielding.

Well, after about 15 games or so I was ready to say "screw it!" and get used to sucking at this game. Then the hit parade began!! I switched to veteran, started to pick where I wanted to swing and have hit TONS of homers and scored a bunch of runs. I rule again!!!!

Hooray for Hammer! It's always a good feeling to get off the schnide, as Rock would put it. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Dang, jazzytrav, I sure hope I don't run into that glitch. So far, so good. *knocks on wood, wood injures rotator cuff* Is there a particular game mode it does that in, or is it in any game mode?

I haven't had it happen in anything but franchise mode. And I'm already up to 2016, so I imagine it's one of those glitches that happens when the game is overloaded with info.

UGH. I hate when that happens, that has been a glitch in this game for two years now.

When that happens I just keep running whatever direction I would be running if I had the correct player (e.g. a pop up hit infront of the 2B and they give me Bill Hall I just run towards the third base dugout because that's the way I'd be breaking with Weeks) and the computer usually is intelligent enough to catch the ball or give me who I should have had in the first place.

Well, I figured out the home run freeze thing. I had turned off the home run celebration because I found it to be annoying (especially when they just show that hitter and not where the ball went). Apparently that caused a problem where the hitter would just stand at home plate and wouldn't run the bases. And you can't get them to run the bases. So the game didn't actually freeze, it just was waiting for something that you couldn't make happen.

In a way it was roughly similar to what happened too often in the '07 version and once or twice so far in '08: anyone else ever go to the bullpen to warm someone up while you're batting, then have the computer tell you that you have to put in a new pitcher (even though you're batting and obviously can't)? It's kinda the same thing because the game doesn't actually freeze, but the glitch won't allow you to do anything and the only option then is to quit.

I hate that glitch. I did get a glitch this time where they made me warm up pitchers for the computer, LOL.

In my game Prince Fielder is on a home run tear. He has 10 HR in 4 games. My offense was rolling until I ran into Kevin Slowey who shut me down for 7 innings but ended up getting tagged with the loss after Weeks sac filed home Counsell (who was Slowey's responsibility), Gross hit a 2 run HR and Fielder followed with a solo shot effectively blowing my save opp.

Thanks a lot for the tip on L2, I've already used it a few times to circumvent the game giving me Prince on a ball hit to JJ Hardy.

Just want to post again on my franchise mode... as I mentioned I took the Rangers (crappy team...no emotional ties to it), and made some trades. I didn't have the 'force the trade' option on, so it was only what the CPU accepted. I honestly don't even remember all the players I gave up, but I'd signed Barry Bon... er, Reggie Stocker to DH, Morgan Ensberg to platoon with Blalock, & traded for SP Ubaldo Jimenez (COL), OF B.J. Upton (TB), & C Ryan Doumit (PIT). There is no way I should have been able to add all three of those guys, but I figure for how many other times the CPU makes a dumb trade refusal... we're even.

http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I've got Salatalalamalachia at 1B, with Upton in LF & super-subbing at 2B/3B/OF. Platooning Doumit/Laird, and I got Anibal Sanchez somehow as AAA pitching depth... don't even remember who I traded for him. Anyway, even with my offense seemingly rocking (iirc the game rates the Rangers' bats as like 5th-best in the season), I've gotten my ass handed to me by the CPU each of the last 3 games I've played. I can't wait to get home from work so I can get that monkey off my back!

It's also getting a little annoying when there's a ground ball up the middle, I send my shortstop after it, and he runs right over it. I wouldn't mind it as much if they would make it so that he just can't make the play, but the gameplay just looks ridiculous when a guy seemingly hops over a grounder instead of fielding it.

Jazzytrav, I had to go dig for this comment. It happened to me for the first time last night. It was with my 2B -- I took an angle to try & get my player more in line with a throw to 1B... so I kind of rounded my route. Think a slight arc starting towards LC, then curving toward the ball's path to the right side of 2B. The ball went right under/'through' my fielder. Yuck. I wonder if it has to do with me arc-ing the route.

One related comment, and to be accurate this was fixed for '07 but is even better imo in '08 -- they got rid of this ^^ glitch in the OF. I can handle my IF missing a grounder every once in a blue moon & having it roll out for a single. But I can't handle when it rolls to the wall for a 3B. To clarify, I mean mostly line-drives, not grounders for the OF. If that bug hadn't have been fixed, I probably wouldn't have even bothered checking out '08.

i wish mlb the show came out on xbox 360.....mlb 2k sucks every year

I love the defense on the MLB 2k series over the Show. The throwing with the right analog stick creates a lot of weird plays. I like the hitting better in 2K both are very easy to crack home runs once you get the timing down. The pitching with the right analog stick sucks it is just way to hard to get an accurate pitch. I love the one button and setting the break point on the 2K pitching. I wish mlb the show had the break point for pitching.

The graphics are about the same. The players perform about the same. Ryan Braun on 2K in my franchise can never hit more than 20 HR's if I sim the hole season. In MLB the Show if I sim the whole year I get about 25 HR's from Braun. In the Show Braun has an average of .320 and in 2K8 he has an average of .330.

The Show kinda does have that this season -- the breaking pitches show you a path of arrows indicating the break direction & appx. amount. Depending on the pitch & where you move the cursor, the 'break path' of arrows shrinks or grows. So, on a curve, the lower you target the pitch, the more it will break, for example. Is that what you basically mean with 'break point'?
