Yeah, we listened on TV and then had to go back to the radio archive later on to hear everything with Costas. He's such a good announcer and a perfect voice for it, alot like Uecker and Scully.

Too bad he doesn't have a job and instead is doing the HBO show.

I was disappointed that his time in the box with Uecker wasn't as funny as I thought it might be, but it was still enjoyable. He was going to tell a story from the 95 series about Uecker but the inning ran out. I have to dig out my 95 series tapes!

He's always annoyed me like "know it all guy" at the park does. I'm not sure how it became accepted that he is the voice of the fan, or something. Or why his book (where he outlines his plan to "fix" baseball) should be taken seriously, as if his opinion holds weight.

I'm just not a fan of him at all. I think he's quite smug and arrogant, actually.

Pitchleague,

Did you listen to the later innings Friday night? Costas went back to the radio booth with Uke and Jim (which I thought was cool--he made himself right at home) and did tell his 95 WS story. The story that Costas related is well known to Brewers fans--that Uecker told him about being injected with hepatitis prior to the 1964 world series. Funny stuff! After the seventh inning Villanueva debacle, the Bob squared show was a needed tonic.

I've never liked Costas, but I thought it was great when he was in the booth Friday night and said "Bonds is on steroids, lets face it, I live on the planet Earth not in a cave" or something to that effect. That was the first time I think I've heard any "big name" sports guy come out and make a statement like that.

I like Costas, but he can get a bit preachy at times. I was surprised that he was as blunt as he was with his statements (not that I disagree, I'd just expect someone like Costas to veil his comments a little more). I was fine with it at first, but he kept going on and on about it and it grew a little tiring. Reminded me of this year's All-Star Game when Joe Buck spent a full inning telling fans how they should feel about the Steroid Era.

sundown kid,

thanks for the tip. I only knew he was in the booth in the middle innings. Back to the archive for me later on!

Buck's a latter day Costas. Neither one of them deserved the jobs they got when they got them. There's so many great minor league announcers and announcers for other MLB teams that have worked hard for a long time and never get the shot that Buck got because of nepotism and Costas got for who knows what reason.

I've always liked Costas, and I generally dislike announcers. I don't mind him being "preachy" because he stands up for what he thinks and offers a well-reasoned opinion. He's actually very funny, too, which doesn't often come out in the studio gigs he does, but he used to host late-night comedy TV. It's a shame he doesn't do more baseball. Really good announcers like Costas, Al Michaels, and Steve Stone don't do enough games, while blowhards like McCarver, Morgan and Berman do far too many.

Brett, you really seem to have an axe to grind. Why didn't Costas "deserve" his place in broadcasting? He worked as the radio voice of the ABA team in St. Louis, and NBC saw fit to hire him for national events (presumably after a good audition). The rest is history.

I'd say that Matt V's career path was pretty similar.....both parlayed smaller gigs into a network deal that provided more exposure, at a relatively young age.

I enjoyed when Costas called baseball games even if i don't always agree with his views. He calls events wonderfully and without forcing things, just naturally good at it.Loved when Costas and Uecker used to call playoff games, they worked great together.

Totally agree with that. I do see what people mean about Costas sounding like a bit of a know it all or preachy at time. But I still think hes a great broadcaster.

Costas is OK. He genuinely loves baseball and isn't a slave to espn or the Yankees. That puts him above almost everyone else working in sports today.

His book was silly and superficial though. Why do sports journalists think personal observation trumps fact or serious research?

Sure, and as much as I like Vasgersian, Costas has more talent in his nostrils than Vasgersian has anywhere.

Wearing my heart on my sleeve since birth. Hopefully, it's my only crime.
